“I want to sincerely thank the Emergency Department, ICU, and Medical Wing at CGMH for the exceptional care they have provided to my son.
My son is immunocompromised and, as a result, has been a frequent visitor to the hospital since early 2025. He has been treated multiple times, with four visits resulting in hospital admissions. Each time, we were met with professionalism, urgency, and compassion.
Having worked as a first responder for decades, I have a deep appreciation for the pressures and challenges that come with fast-paced, high-stakes environments. That understanding makes me even more grateful for the role your Emergency team plays in quickly stabilizing patients and preparing them for the next steps in care. Within such a demanding setting, the reassurance we felt from the staff meant everything.
My son’s first admission in early 2025 was especially challenging. At that time, the Emergency team was not yet familiar with how quickly his condition could deteriorate. Although he appeared stable while awaiting admission, he became septic the following morning. We shared feedback through a patient survey, unsure of what impact it might have.
What happened next left a lasting impression on us.
Since that first admission, every subsequent visit has been immediate, coordinated, and flawless. The team now understands my son’s condition and responds right away. It is deeply reassuring to know that clear protocols are in place and that our local Emergency Department took the time to learn his story.
The nursing staff in all units is exceptional. On multiple visits, my son was cared for by the same nurse, whose kindness and attentiveness stood out. The nurses checked in frequently, made sure my son was comfortable, offering thoughtful care, right down to making sure he had a warm blanket when needed.
I also want to recognize the Admissions nurses, who immediately understood the urgency of my son’s condition. They ensured he was triaged without delay and fast tracked into the Emergency Department every time.
Early in 2025, my son was admitted to the ICU with sepsis and placed under the care of Dr. Bonta, one of CGMH’s Internal Medicine physicians, who coordinated closely with his specialists in Toronto. Knowing he had existing relationships and direct communication with these specialists brought an enormous sense of relief.
During that ICU admission, Dr. Bonta looked at every possible cause of the infection. He covered every base possible and beyond. Dr. Bonta’s compassion, and dedication helped keep us steady during an incredibly difficult time.
Later in 2025, my son was admitted again. Dr. Bonta and Dr. Plume took the time to explain every step, involved the specialists, and even attempted to coordinate virtual consultations during his stay.
Sadly, the infection persisted despite treatment, and my son had to return. During his time in the ICU, the nurse went above and beyond. After I left, I learned that she sat with my son throughout the night for comfort when he started to run a high fever. Knowing that this type of compassion and care takes place despite the busy nature of an ICU is impressive and appreciated.
In early 2026, my son was admitted once again. Dr. Basinski listened carefully to our growing concerns, coordinated further investigations with specialists, and ensured urgent follow-up was arranged. He went well beyond simply treating the infection and focused on finding answers, communicating clearly with us every step of the way.
What I appreciate most about every doctor and nurse we encountered is their willingness to listen and truly hear our concerns, explain what was happening, and outline clear plans for care.
In a time when our healthcare system is often scrutinized for wait times and staffing challenges, I can confidently say that the care at CGMH has been exceptional. I am deeply grateful to know this level of care exists in our community.”
