I’m proud to have been a member of the Family Practice team at CGMH for 25 years – the place where all four of my boys were born. There has been a lot of change in healthcare during that time and much of the time, we’ve been leading the way.
In 2004, I became the Founding Chair of the Georgian Bay Family Health Team. We were unique in the province in that we successfully recruited all family physicians in South Georgian Bay to become one cohesive group, originally the largest such group in Ontario. Accessing resources as a group (such as nurse practitioners) allowed us to care for more local patients – improving care and reducing emergency department visits. With a common electronic patient record we were able to access technology to tie in other providers such as the Health Care Provider Portal to some local nursing homes.
I am a voice for all family physicians in Ontario in my role on the Executive of the Family & General Practice Section of the Ontario Medical Association and in my upcoming position as a director on the OMA Board.
You don’t have to practice at a big city hospital to make a big impact. We’re doing it here too!
