Jan 9th, COLLINGWOOD ON: The communities of South Georgian Bay have once again demonstrated their unwavering support for the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH), raising over $2.1 Million for two new mammography units, ensuring women in our community have access to the very best in breast cancer screening and care.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of donors. We see time and time again our community rally to meet the needs of our hospital. These two new mammography units are essential to the hospital and the health of the women in our community. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we will be able to acquire this vital equipment,” says Dr. Michael Lisi, Chief of Staff & General Surgeon at CGMH.

CGMH’s existing mammography unit is over 10 years old now and is at the end of its lifespan. “Every year, the mammography unit at CGMH performs over 7,000 mammograms, far more than the average 2,500 exams handled by most hospitals. That alone highlights the need for more than one machine,” said Jamey Gilroy, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging & Echocardiography at CGMH. “With the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) lowering the age to include women aged 40 to 74, the demand for this equipment will only grow, thus the need for a second unit.”

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, including Teri Yamada & Doug Moxon, who pledged to match every donation up to $375,000, our community raised over $2.1 Million, surpassing the goal for this year’s Tree of Life campaign. With the postal strike this year, the CGMH Foundation saw a significant increase in online and in-person donations.

These gifts will allow CGMH to purchase two new mammography units. Additional funding raised during the Tree of Life Campaign will go towards funding other outstanding critical needs that will impact Internal Medicine at CGMH.

“A big thank you to all of those who made a donation to the Tree of Life Campaign. Thank you for helping provide patients in South Georgian Bay with the highest standard of care, by equipping our hospital with the tools needed to continue to meet the growing healthcare needs of our community,” says Jory Pritchard-Kerr, President & CEO of the CGMH Foundation.
