Giving Tuesday is a global celebration of generosity. Today, we are taking a moment to recognize two of our incredible volunteers whose dedication continues to shape the future of care in South Georgian Bay. Norm Sandham and Hilary Laidlaw are wonderful examples of how volunteerism can strengthen a community.
Norm and Hilary have spent over 30 years in Collingwood. First as weekenders and now as full-time residents, they were both inspired by how deeply engaged the South Georgian Bay community is. Hilary, who has long been involved in volunteer work throughout her legal career, was especially struck by the unique spirit of giving she found here. “Volunteering here takes on a different flavour,” she says. “It’s been an honour to participate and see the results of that involvement.”
For Norm, volunteering his time and talent comes naturally, and the decision to support the hospital felt instinctive. “Everyone needs it at some point,” he explains. “It’s not a niche cause, it’s universal.” As a Tomorrow’s Hospital Campaign Ambassador, Norm spends his time talking to neighbours and friends about the future of care in the region. “The generosity and giving spirit here is alive and well,” he says. “It’s what keeps me motivated.”
Together, Norm and Hilary have found a shared purpose in supporting the CGMH Foundation. Hilary serves on the Foundation Board, where she’s continually inspired by the dedication and skill of her fellow volunteers. “The impact of volunteerism is cumulative,” she says. “Even the smallest effort snowballs into something meaningful. It’s a collective force, and I love that dynamic.”
Their passion is contagious. In 2019, they hosted a fundraiser at the Gayety Theatre called Gabor & Friends, raising over $20,000. “It was a blast,” Norm recalls. “Fundraising can be fun, and people should look at events like that as a way to get involved.”
For Hilary, the rewards of volunteering are deeply personal. “It’s self-serving in the best way,” she shares. “The satisfaction you get is enormous. Seeing Norm’s reaction to the generosity of our friends this year has been incredibly moving.”
Their advice to others? “Just get involved,” Hilary says. “There are so many ways to contribute. Find what inspires you, and bring your skills to the table.”
As South Georgian Bay prepares for a new hospital, Norm and Hilary feel honoured to be part of the journey. “What a time to be involved,” Hilary says. “To witness the milestones and know you played a part is truly gratifying.”
On this Giving Tuesday, the CGMH Foundation team extends our deepest gratitude to Norm and Hilary, and to all of our volunteers. Your time, energy, and passion make our work possible, and your impact is felt across our community. Thank you for helping us build a healthier tomorrow.
