Update: With the Ontario Breast Screening Program lowering the self-referral age from 50 to 40, we’re now working to raise funds for two mammography units! This will help reduce wait times and ensure faster access to life-saving breast cancer screenings.
You may have heard that the Ontario government is expanding the Ontario Breast Screening Program to include women that are 40 years of age and older. This is an important step forward in ensuring that more women can access breast cancer screening services. But while the government is improving access, it’s up to us, as a community, to ensure that the care they receive is equipped with the best resources and equipment.
When women walk through the doors of our hospital for a mammogram, CGMH wants them to be met with the most advanced, effective screening tools available. But right now, our hospital’s mammography equipment is aging, and while it has served our community well over the last ten years, it not only needs to be replaced, it needs to be modernized with the latest and most advanced technology.
Bringing Contrast Enhanced Mammography to CGMH.
Contrast Enhanced Mammography represents a significant leap forward in breast cancer detection. By using a contrast agent to highlight areas of concern, it provides incredibly detailed images, making it especially effective for women with dense breast tissue—one of the key challenges in traditional mammography.
This technology will help detect cancers earlier, reduce the need for additional invasive testing, and most importantly, save lives by diagnosing breast cancer more quickly and accurately.
“By bringing contrast enhanced mammography to CGMH, we are helping to ensure that every woman in our community has access to the very best in breast cancer screening and care. We will give families hope, equip team CGMH with the tools we need, and provide patients the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are receiving the highest standard of care.” – Jamey Gilroy
Jamey Gilroy is the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging and Echocardiography for CGMH. Jamey, along with the team at CGMH are working hard to ensure that our community receives the best in patient care. This includes purchasing the newest technology in diagnostic imaging equipment for better, faster diagnosis, close to home.
