Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) is celebrating a significant advancement in diagnostic imaging with the opening of its newly renovated Nuclear Medicine suite and the introduction of new SPECT-CT technology.
Following six months of renovations, the new suite, located in the former Hospital Foundation space, features the Siemens Symbia Pro SPECT-CT system, bringing enhanced diagnostic capabilities to CGMH and the South Georgian Bay community.
The expansion represents an important investment in diagnostic imaging and advances CGMH’s Strategic Plan commitment to create capacity for a growing population by expanding programs and services and improving access to care, closer to home.
SPECT-CT combines nuclear medicine imaging with computed tomography (CT), allowing healthcare teams to see both how the body is functioning and detailed anatomical images of where activity is occurring. By bringing these two technologies together, clinicians can access more precise diagnostic information to support diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care. The SPECT-CT system also has full diagnostic CT capabilities and will act as a valuable back up system during maintenance on our main CT.
“SPECT-CT introduces a whole new dimension to diagnostic imaging at CGMH,” said Jamey Gilroy, Manager, Diagnostic Imaging and Echocardiography. “This technology helps clinicians assess how organs and tissues function, while also providing detailed anatomical images. The result is more accurate information to support diagnosis and treatment decisions for our patients.”
The technology will support a wide range of clinical applications, including cancer care, cardiac imaging, infection detection, and the investigation of inflammatory conditions. It can help clinicians detect the spread of cancer to bones and lymph nodes, identify infection or inflammation, assess heart function, and pinpoint abnormalities with greater accuracy.
“This project is about more than bringing new technology to our hospital,” said Michael Lacroix, President and CEO. “It is about ensuring CGMH can keep pace with the needs of our growing region. By expanding local access to advanced diagnostics, we are strengthening our ability to deliver high-quality care today while building the capacity needed for the future.”
The hospital extends its sincere gratitude to the CGMH Foundation, donors and community members whose generosity helped make this project possible. Their support has played a vital role in bringing this advanced technology to CGMH and enhancing access to diagnostic care for patients across South Georgian Bay.
“The arrival of the SPECT-CT scanner is a testament to the generosity of the people who call South Georgian Bay home,” said Sandra Taylor, President & CEO, CGMH Foundation. “We are proud to see the one-million dollars raised in donor support for this equipment translate into tangible improvements in patient care.”
