South Georgian Bay’s Hospital of Tomorrow.

We have outgrown our current hospital. Everyday, we face challenges resulting from crowded patient rooms, the inability to create efficient departmental adjacencies and patient flow, and inadequate comfort, safety, and privacy for patients. With 80% of our current facility originally built in the 1950’s, dense infrastructure means that we cannot renovate to meet current patient care standards and there is no room to expand.

The challenges of delivering exceptional care in our environment are compounded by so many things: access to state-of-the-art technology, recruitment of medical professionals and specialists, and proximity to regional centres.

At CGMH we know that a bright, beautiful tomorrow is always possible because of the care we give today. Our staff, physicians, nurses and volunteers care deeply about this community. They’ve spent years pushing past the limitations and obstacles that come from working in an aging and overflowing facility. Despite growing challenges, they’ve introduced innovative programs and technologies that have allowed the hospital to deliver uncompromised care. They’ve been taking care of today, but now we need help to take care of tomorrow.

An Emergency Department built for a growing community

Today, our emergency department is less than half the size it should be. We treat more than 37,000 patients annually and by 2028/29, those visits are expected to increase by 19%.

The new hospital will offer quick access to the expanded Operating Suites, and state-of-the-art technology and equipment critical to ensuring that tomorrow, we can deliver the very best patient care and outcomes.

A growing role in cancer care

Today, the CGMH team delivers about 1,000 oncology-related patient visits annually, playing an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients in South Georgian Bay. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment and the expertise of onsite Radiologists ensure that cancer diagnoses can be made quickly and accurately.

In our hospital of tomorrow, we expect to conduct over 5,000 oncology related visits annually. When we open the new facility in 2032, we will have a landmark satellite chemotherapy unit, in partnership with RVH’s Oncology Department to provide local treatment for our patients.

We will ensure that patients can access gold standard cancer care in their local community and with their personal support systems nearby, without the need for frequent travel.

CGMH is committed to ensuring that healthcare providers are equipped and prepared to provide gold standard care and equitable health outcomes in unpredictable, high acuity and high stakes clinical situations – even in a rural setting.

Tomorrow’s hospital will include a State-of-the-art learning centre, strengthening education, training and research, as well as recruitment and retention of top healthcare professionals.
