April 4th, COLLINGWOOD ON: In early March, Osler Bluff Ski Club hosted their inaugural event, the Osler 42, climbing over 6 Mount Everests and raising over $4,500 for CGMH.
“Osler Bluff Ski club is committed to giving back to the community ,” says Brad Deunch, Osler’s General Manager, “We wanted to create an event that would align with the club and also allow everyone to participate with the ultimate goal of supporting the needs of our local hospital.”
The event was inspired by the idea of doing repeated laps of a hill until you have climbed the equivalent height of Mount Everest (29,032 feet or 8,500 meters). The catch is that these laps must be done in one continuous effort without mechanical aid such as a chairlift. In understanding that this is not an attainable goal for everyone, Osler Bluff Ski Club wanted to create an opportunity for all to participate and achieve their own version of this feat so they created the Osler 42.
The Osler 42 saw individuals and teams attempt to tackle as many laps as they could over a 7-hour period. In total, participants completed 248 climbs and descents of the hill, all while raising money for a great cause. That equates to a total elevation gain of 57,040 meters, which means participants climbed the equivalent height of just under 6.5 Everests! In addition to the incredible physical feat, the event has raised $4,289 and counting for the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation!
Funds raised from the event will go to Internal Medicine, breast care screenings and diagnosis, advanced resuscitations, and better, faster results from our laboratory; all in the name of better patient outcomes.
A special shout-out goes to the “Vintage Skinners” for hoisting the trophy for the team that completed the most laps, with 60. The trophy for the individual who completed the most laps throughout the day went to Dan Mclaughlin, who completed an incredible 13. “It was amazing to see everyone support each other as they worked to achieve and often push beyond their original goals”, says event organizer Ben Hanson “ It was a fantastic day out on the slopes, building community and helping people realise they are capable of more than they think.”
